"Community is a word whose currency is rising faster than the US dollar is tanking. Academics, practitioners and commentators grappling with the sociological implications of how experimental music is created, use it often and broadly. Community is no longer primarily defined by geography, the way it as when John Coltrane, Jimmy Heath and a cadre of musicians literary grew up within blocks of each other in Philadelphia. Even historical alternative settings such as the military are now marginalized in the current thinking about community: as absurdly funny as it now seems the British Royal Air Force facilitated the creation of one of the most radical experimental communities ( σημ.: εννοεί την παρέα μουσικών που έδρασε γύρω από το όνομα Spontaneous Music Ensemble) by introducing Paul Rutheford, John Stevens and Trevor Watts to each oother.

These traditional models of  community have been eclipsed by new models created largely through travel and short-term meetings. In an enviroment where years can elapse between a group's first performance-regardless, going-concern status is conferred upon the second gig-the net result is a proliferation of new communities, not the dissipation of an original tribe. Most importantly these new modalities for creating community recognise that experimentation is based in practice, not routine. Long stretches in the shed and on the road are essential for the refinement of a repertoire or a set of interactions: but, by and large, they are regimens more driven by standards of craftmanship than by experimantation."
