Arrington de Dionyso, magick and music

A small interview about music, magic and transcendental artworks...

1. The initial reason for this is Psicolomagicolo, your duo with Nusch Werchowska on the Petit label. Through your droney sounds and the percussive nature of Werchowskas' piano you seem to transcend some kind of magic to the listener. Your thoughts on this?

Thank you, I'm happy you enjoy that recording. When I first met Nusch it seemed right away we had a very natural way of listening to each other and giving each enough space in the music to feel free and explore together. I think the Psicolomagicolo session was the first recording session we had together. We don't get to play very often because of course she lives in Rennes, France, and I live in the United States. So any time we have played together it's while I was on tour in Europe. We also played a nice festival in Cherbourg, France called "La Terra Trema", and maybe somewhere is a recording of the concert?

2. Do you believe in the non-verbal communication of this art called music? If yes, can you elaborate your visions on this? Would you describe your music as spiritual?

Yes of course music is spiritual...almost any music can be spiritual music is there is an intention behind it to make it spiritual music- but I also believe there are certain properties in taking certain approaches to the sounds that go further in creating that kind of "spiritual" impression- with microtones, certain kind of overtone approaches communicate that feeling. I don't want to make music that is just for people listening, it should also be pleasing to the spirits around us.

3. When you record something new, or play live, do you feel eager (or restless maybe) to transcend feelings, thoughts or whatever else to the listener?

Music is like a vehicle, it can take you to another place. So it depends on the power of the music, on the clarity of the musician, where you decide to travel with it. If you're listening to my music, I suppose you are free to travel anywhere you want to go with it...but it's nice if you allow yourself to listen and feel transformed in some way.

4. The way this world works (and is ruled by power) makes you feel that the magic of music is necessary for all of us? Do you think that all the above can be transformed to something more radical, even revolutionary?

I believe music can liberate the soul. When we feel like slaves, of capitalism or other systems of oppression holding us prisoner, yes I believe we can use music to find a place of freedom, even if our physical surroundings are still holding us.

5. Your artworks (i'm a big fan of all of them) depicts images of sexual freedom, bright colours from the East, like Indonesia. Is all this a part of you? Do you feel those images (another non-verbal communication) are of need to the western world or do you think (while we are overpowered by images and information on the internet) they are normalised like a modern way of orientalism?

Bright colors just exist, they aren't from the East or the West. I love going to Indonesia for many reasons. Mostly I love being in a place where people believe in the power of music to communicate with spirits, where people believe in the magic of dragons all around in the forces of nature. Dragons are good for any world, we only live on one world, so the East or West doesn't matter. It's a way of understanding the technology of consciousness. I'm not really interested in "Orientalism" in that way at all. I'm interested in what makes us human no matter where we come from, what makes us feel connected to a sense of purpose and to a greater feeling of spiritual connection through visual imagination or musical imagination. I don't copy other cultures, I don't care about that at all. I enter into new situations and meet new people and I am open to discover what we might have in common, or where we might have a different perspective. I love making collaborations with Indonesian musicians because there is just a certain way of hearing the music that makes it really easy to find something exciting when we work together- a little bit inside an ancient tradition, but a little bit far away looking for something new at the same time .

6. Translating your images: demons are humans or humans are demonic?Maybe both even at the same time?

That is why I named one of my bands "Malaikat dan Singa": Angels and Lions. Inside every human there are angels and lions.
